You sound like my dad. I have several older brothers and they all got the vehicle of their choice. I wanted a Jeep. But I settled for a pick up. It was older & had a little rust but it was better than any of my friend's cars. Let her have the truck, make her pay for gas & insurance & if she has a good pt job make her pay the down. If paying cash make her pay the first $500 It will make her want it more if she has something invested in it.

Get her a truck, less likely to have a carload of teenagers, which is as risky a situation as drinking and driving.
Make some hard and fast rules. ie, never have more than one person with you. Never let people ride in the bed of the pickup. Follow the curfew rules. No drinking. Don't allow her to talk on a cellphone when driving. If she breaks the rules, she gives up the car for the proscribed length of time. Write down the rules and both you and she sign them, as in a contract, so she can't talk you out of the appropriate punishment for infractions.
If she makes it to 18 safely without accident, you can relax some of the rules, except of course, drinking and driving, and maybe cellphone use. The ages of 16 and 17 are still on the learning curve for driving situations, thus the safety factor in not having too many people (distractions) with you in the vehicle.
I say give her the pickup and be grateful that is her choice.

It all depends on where you live I think. If you're out in the country, or if she's a bit older and could use it to move stuff, I don't think getting a truck is a bad idea at all!
Otherwise, Subarus are fantastic. My first car was a standard Ford Escort. I LOVED learning how to drive a standard! I have an Subaru Impreza though and it's super safe and reliable.
Just don't spoil her by getting her a brand new model... she has to learn to earn what she gets!

For a young driver, safety should be your primary concern. Any car she gets should have front, side and ceiling (or curtain) airbags, and have a 4 or 5 star crash test rating. We went with Saabs and Volvos and one Audi for the kids because they are the most survivable cars in a crash. Don't let them worry about style. Drivers in the 16-17 year old age group have a mortality rate that is higher than every other age group, combined. Lack of experience, driving with friends, driving too fast, and being easily distracted are big risk factors for teens. Give them every chance to walk away safely if they react badly to a driving situation.

I wanted a truck too,but my step dad went out and picked out a neat little red sports car-told me I'd look sexier in it,lol.I still want a truck, but now that I'm married and aged 44,it will have to wait for tax refund. At least with a truck, she can't load up with friends who might distract her from driving.

If your son can have a truck why can't your daughter? That is the most sexist thing I have ever heard! If your son got one let your daughter it's not a big deal

a truck would be fine, something small like a ranger, they come in chick colors anyhow.
and the smaller the truck, the less people she'll have piled in, and think about it...no back seat!!!
unless your in a warm climate, there will be a minimum of hanky panky in bed of that truck. even then just get one of those solid covers and lock it

does your son haul things around, would your daughter need to haul things around? that is the only reason to get a truck that is what they are good for.
trucks flip, too slow to avoid accidents, to slow in general, bad weight distribution, use too much gas,
sport cars are much safer. they have power to get you out of a bad situation, brakes are better, better on gas, very difficult to flip, easier to drive, easier to park, and fast
