Your vocal cords are two bands of elastic muscle tissue located side by side in your voice box just above your windpipe. When you are sleeping, the cords remain open and relaxed. Just as you take that nice stretch in the morning to get your body ready to start moving again, your vocals cords take a little time to stretch and get ready a day of use as well.

I don't know, but Kevin Conroy, the actor who provided the voice of Batman in Batman: The Animated Series, would record his lines early in the morning so Batman would have more gravel in his voice. Also, for some songs in lower keys, The Beatles would sometimes record their vocals in the morning.

b/c your vocal cords are relaxed, therefore loose, therefore lower in tone.
