I'm just wanting to know the significance of the olive tree or olive branch or symbol of it in the Bible. Why do you think God uses the Olive tree as opposed to say...an apple tree?

Of course we know that the olive branch is a symbol of peace and that olive oil was used to anoint people for God's service. Those are some obvious reasons.

Another illustration could be used for Jesus. Now the Bible says that Jesus is the Prince of Peace. The Bible also says that only by the crushing of the olive do you get the oil (and even if the Bible didn't say that, its still true). Now, Jesus, a type of olive, was send to the earth to be crushed for our sins. Through the crushing of Jesus, a type of olive, came the anointing oil for the redemtion of man. This is another reason why the olive tree is significant in the Bible because it is a picture of a peaceful Jesus with a precious resource inside of Him being crushed in order to cover the sins of many. The Bible says that the chastisment of our peace was upon Him. The crushing we deserved was used to crush Him in our stead so that after He was crushed, the oil that came from Him would be applied on us so that we could live in peace with God forever. I think that is so cool.

The Olive tree was the most important and symbolic plants mentioned in the Bible. Its oil anointed prophets and Kings. Genesis 35:14,15, Jacob poured oil on a stone pillar. By this symbolic act he set aside that place, which he called Bethel, the place where God had spoken to him, as holy.

Old Testament anointing signifies the holiness of the anointed objects or persons, their separation to God and also Divine Authority.

The Olive tree is know to produce rich fruits, from rocky countryside, that could produce little else.

The nation of Israel is referred to the garden olive tree. The gentiles are from the wild olive tree; Romans 11:17-24.

Isaiah 61:3b ..and they must be called big trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, for him to be beautified.

At Exodus 30:22-29 ...describes a formula for anointing oil, including olive oil. This was to anoint articles in the tent of meeting, and the tent itself, and Aaron; to become most holy. Anyone touching them is to be holy. The formula was not to be used for anything else, and disregarded would incur the death penalty.

There is a book by Larry Wilson that explains them very well and it's free. Go to www.wake-up.org and order the free book on Revelations or watch his videos. He is not of any denomination and has very good Bible studies for free. At least listen to his point of view and read your Bible for yourself. God's wisdom will help you understand.
