The condition is called fissured tongue.The grooves on the dorsal surface of the tongue becomes deep in some people and appear as fissures . It is not a pathological condition which needs any kind of medical treatment.Such people will thorough cleaning of the tongue to remove food debris from the fissures.

dave.whatever got it first, Geographic tongue. My mom has it, but neither of us kids do. It is just a cosmetic thing, and is not painful, nor associated with any other "conditions".
