Does your dog have any open sores on his skin? Flies are attracted to sores, blood and rotting flesh. Sometimes if a dog is matted they may have a sore under a mat that you may not even be aware of. So don't beat yourself up about it, all dogs with longer hair get a mat or two. If they land on your dog they will lay eggs and eggs hatch out into maggots. Take your dog to the Vet or to a groomer. A good Dip mixed extra strong poured over the infected place will kill the maggots, but you have to watch out for other hatching eggs and they will need to dipped again. The only reason I suggest a Vet or groomer, is that they know how to safely mix the dip so it will be strong enough to kill the maggots and not the dog. A good groomer will give you enough dip and show you how to do this at home for any additional dippings. After the maggots are dead, your Vet will want to give you some antibiotics for the open sore. The dead maggots will wash off easily, no picking is needed! Never put oil, baby or otherwise on your pet. Just like with babies, if they injest the oil it can get into the lungs and they can keep them from being able to breath The only other thing I know of that will kill maggots is bleach............NO DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!!.... These horrible critters can cause a lot of damage because they eat the rotting skin on your living dog. If left untreated, it can get very bad, but it is easily treated if you take care of it now. Please, please get help for your dog, flesh eating, is very painful. Good luck.

They are probably maggots and your dog will need veterinary treatment. The vet will likely shave the area, remove the maggots and then treat for the infections the maggots caused. There are many reasons dogs get maggots...usually a wound, matted fur or having feces stuck to their fur. Flies are drawn to blood, dirt, food, feces, etc. and will lay eggs on dogs that have these problems. The eggs then hatch into maggots. What you are seeing is likely just the tip of the iceberg. I highly recommend getting your dog to the vet TODAY!!! Even if you have the proper treatment meds, etc for this, it is not something I recommend anyone do at home...it's really gross and lots of work!!! If you really insist on treating this at home, you will need to get an electric clippers for shaving dogs, an antibacterial cleaning agent for dogs, and a spray that will kill maggots (one safe for animals). For the spray, my clinic used a type of fly spray for cattle...worked really well. Your dog will need to be kept inside for a while to prevent reinfestation. Don't put peroxide on the wound...your dog will get sick if he licks it and peroxide can make it worse. Again, your dog really should be seen by a vet for proper treatment of at least the infection the maggots caused. PS...this is not always due to neglect as some people have suggested...If I find a picture for you to compare with, I will post the link. Good luck.

They probably are maggots. It only takes a day or two for them to show up. Flies will lay eggs anywhere your dog has been chewing and the fur is wet. If you can't give it a good bath and scrub all the maggots out the vet can. And they can shave the area and give you a cream to cover it to keep more eggs from being laid. The maggots will get under the skin so there are probably more than you see Good luck

They sound like warble fly maggots. They usually infect cattle (do you live in an area with cattle?). The best thing to do - and quickly - is to take your dog to the vet. The wounds could get infected if you try removing the maggots yourself.

Life cycle of the warble fly

Adult warble flies are hairy and about the size of small bees with yellow-orange abdomens. The fly lays eggs on the hair of cattle during summer. After about 4 days larvae hatch and migrate into the skin. The larvae move between muscle layers to either the oesophagus or the spinal canal where the larvae stay dormant during winter. In late winter or early spring the larvae migrate to the tissue under the skin on the back where they mature for about 30 days. The larvae then drop off the host animal and pupate in soil. The fly emerges after about 36 days. There are two species of Warble Fly: Hypoderma bovis andHypoderma lineatum.
Clinical signs

Attacks by warble flies laying eggs can cause irritation to cattle. Cattle may injure themselves as a result.

The larval migration is not usually noticed clinically, but heavy infestations may reduce growth and milk production. Occasionally the pressure of larvae on the spinal cord can cause paralysis.

When the larvae reach the skin on the animal's back, large, soft, painful swellings of up to 3mm diameter develop. The larvae can be removed from lesions if punctured. They can grow up to 28mm long and range in colour from white to light brown as they mature.

Damage to the hide is usually permanent and carcases may be downgraded due to discoloration of meat along larval tracks. Accidental or deliberate puncture of warbles may lead to allergic reaction.

In the UK, warble fly infestation is a Notifiable Disease and must be treated by law.
