Is that the explaination they told you? If it truly is a biliary drain, that is whats called a "T-tube". Usually its used for situations where you have to reconstruct a damaged common bile duct, or after a bile duct exploration. Usual duration is about 3-6 weeks, enough time for a fistula, or tract to form, before it can safely be removed.
The fact that you had 2 surgeries sounds like there were definite problems with the first surgery.
Of course, damage to adjacent structures is part of the normal risks involved with gall bladder surgery, but if they told you that things grew into other organs, I'm sure curious of the details.
Was your surgery elective? Was it semi-emergency? Were there retained stones? Is there brownish-greenish fluid out of your drain? Did they have to use bowel to reconstruct your bile drainage?

A lot of people have drains after surgery, and for a lot of different surgeries, too. Some people have to have permanent bag for drainage purposes. I knew a guy that had two drainage bags, one for urine and one for feces. That really sucks. But, there is no problem as big as my own problem when I have it. For instance, tonsillectomies are no big deal, but MY tonsillectomy IS a huge deal. I had my gall bladder out, too. No drain, but stitches and now I have scars. You need to care for the drain the way you were taught and if you run into any problems, call your MD. If you forget how to care for it, call your MD. Call him everyday if you need to.

Believe me, you WANT that drain there, if the fluid had no place to go outside of you it will go, you guessed it, INTO you, and that could cause problems such as infection or wound breakdown. I would not think you are up for yet another surgical procedure.

This too shall pass.

I had my gallbladder removed too, but no drain. The drain is just temporary though and it helps to remove fluid that would otherwise accumulate into your abdominal cavity. Its helping u to heal quicker!
