That kind of depends on what your freinds are going to bring and how long you will be in the great outdoors. You can break camping equip down several ways.

Sleeping/shelter - tent, sleeping bag or blanket/pillow- air matress or sleeping mat

General camp gear- Lighting is really important! Bring at least a flashlight for yourself to carry around at night and one that stays in the tent (xtra batteries can be usefull too!) Folding/lawn chair - card table/plastic patio table- firewood/starting fluid/matches/lighter- camp tools (axe/hatchet/saw - hammer - fire tools)-trash bags(multipurpose can be for garbage or to keep important things dry - including yourself!)-Coolers- Pocket knife

Personal items - clothes, appropriate footwear- (depends on terrain and weather)Toiletries - yes TP is important! Hat -for minimalizing exposure to ticks- bug spray-soap(i prefer antibacterial for camping)

Eating/cooking
This can be tricky. For short stays go as simple as you can. Paper plates/cups/bowls/silerware - Aluminun foil- pot/pan
Canned goods make for really easy "on the fire cooking" and cleanup, just dont forget the can opener! You can even cook before you go, and bring it with so you can spend more time having fun and less time cooking! Making smores or roasting mashmellows is always a camp favorite.

One thing that a lot of people forget is a few gallons of water. You can use it for washing dishes, washing your hands/face, brushing teeth, drinking, and cooking.

I have no idea where you are going camping or what the weather is like there. One thing i always plan on, is that it is going to rain! Be ready for that ahead of time. So dont bring anything with that you dont want getting dirty, wet or lost!

Don't forget the fishing poles, radio, frizbee\football, or deck of cards for some entertainment.

I hope this list gives you a good general idea of what to bring and that you have fun on your first camping trip. Talk to your friends ad see what they are bringing so you can take the least amount of stuff with you!

Buy an inexpensive sleeping bag, for about $40-$50. Or, you can manage with 3-4 blankets. Borrow an exercise mat, the kind about an inch thick, foam rubbery, about 30" by 4'. Sleep in somebody's tent- or buy a dome tent, for another $40. EASY to put up - ten minutes tops, first time. Buy two cheap flashlights. Bring several BIG handkerchiefs. Wear loose clothing. Even in summer, bring some warm clothing. No, warmer. Figure it might hit 40 degrees. It won't, but be ready. Being cold makes enjoying camping impossible. So, keep warm. Bugs also can be a pain, so bring lots of bug repellent. Bring powdered garlic too. Often good on food, but seldom gets packed.

Condoms? No but seriously, too many things to mention here. Go online, whoops, you are online, and get yourself a checklist of items that you need, try backpacker.com or something like that. Remember to bring a first aid kit, bug spray, a whistle if you are backpacking, walking poles are a nice thing to have, spare batteries, a map and compass are just a few, just don't bring the kitchen sink. Pack light. No canned food. Have fun!

Flashlight, toiletpaper, sleeping bag, canteen, firestarter, hikingboots, change of underware, firstaid kit, halzone tablets for drinkingwater. Jacket, groundcloth, tent. Find out what foods you need to bring and cookware, often these last two things can be shared. Candy bars for pick-me-ups, and a topographic map of the area you are going to be in.

If you were invited ask your friends what they are bringing for you. and what you may need to bring along. Since they invited you, they are trying to get you involved in something they like so should be more than willing to put you on the right track.

As for camping, the closest to "roughing it" for me would be to stay in a cabin!! LOL
