Parents have the responsibility to educate their children, which includes passing on their beliefs and values.
Of course children will eventually make up their own minds, but it would be wrong to teach them nothing.

Yes, but they're also aware that kids are kids. The parents believe certain things because they feel they are right and the best way to go about life. Naturally, they want to pass these things on to their kids. Kids are young, they don't have a lot of experience, and they haven't learned a lot of the hard lessons their parents have. Also, people have a tendency to believe that the first thing they learn about a situation is the right one. Think about starting a new job. The person who works next to you says the job sucks, the boss is a jerk, and the best thing to do is hide whenever s/he comes around. You don't have any contrasting information, so you're likely to believe what you're told, even if it's not true. Kids are like that, but in EVERYTHING. They're still learning, and parents have a right and a responsibility to teach their kids as best they can.
The world, through their peers, through TV, through everything they see around them, is giving kids one view of life and the world and what's "OK" and what isn't. If parents don't teach their kids what THEY believe, the kids have no choice but to believe what everyone else is saying.

Parents effect the attitudes of their children when they are young and help in the child's adjustment/development later on in life. The kids will follow the adults example to an extent, even when they become adults

The parents responsibility is to teach their children.. when they are grown, they are capable of thinking and changing whatever they desire.. but the imbed is already there for a concerted and deliberate decision.

Children should have minds of their own and they should not have to believe exactly like their parents...but this is not a specific question. Is there a particular situation that you are refering to? More details please.

Oh, it's perfectly alright to think the opposite way your parents do. I'm living proof of that.

Depends. I don't want my kid to think it's OK to judge anyone because of the color of their skin or their sexual orientation. He sure as hell better feel that way or I will beat it into him. lol
