I've heard of certain places where you must have a permit to breed your dog and youcan only breed them if they're from good stock, showing, etc. This greatly reduces the population of unwanted and abandoned animals, plus there is less chance of low quality ill dogs passing on their genes. Does anyone know of a place that does this, or a way to get a law like this passed?

Whatever.... mutts are far healthier than purebred dogs, who people keep breeding in spite of congenital defects that reduce the animals quality of life, for example german shepherds are bred to have sloping back legs, this increases and in fact causes more incidence of hip dysplaysia and yet people keep breeding them. 30-50% of unwanted shelter dogs are purebred, puppy mills produce the largest number of unwanted and sick dogs from purebred stock. It doesnt matter if the dog is pure or not, it doesnt matter if breeders are trying to improve the breed NO ONE should breed ANY kind of dog until the ones in shelters have homes....

I've seen some pretty bad purebreds in my time. You also have only to think what purebred Pit Bulls are capable of - attacking young children etc. Also think about the traditional sheep-chasing dogs, that kill so many during lambing season.

I'm more inclined to support an agressive spaying/neutering program. I might support a law that shuts down pet shops that deliberately breed animals, just for sale - so that people who want pets, go to shelters & other similar places, where the animals need homes.

Pet shop breeing only makes the problem worse. We should also oppose extermination of pets at shelters - make them all no-kill. Society has to be responsible for domesticated animals - if we allow god numbers to increase, we have to deal with the consequences - even if that means raising taxes, to pay for more shelters.

Denver and Aurora, Colorado have done this with most bully breeds. They have to be spayed or neutered, no new puppies allowed, have to have a permit, insurance, and a visible sign that you have an aggresive dog. You have to have them in a 6-sided kennel if outdoors, and a privacy-fenced yard if just occationally let out fromthe house. If riding In a car, they have to be kenneled and stay kenneled at all times. If you are caught breaking any of these rules, they will sieze the dog and put them down. The same doesn't apply to show animals, but some of it might.. It's really Crazy.

Too bad they didn't have this law when your parents met, huh? Or are you a perfect pure-bred?
