Previous poster is correct about the floating egg ....

As cruisers on a sailboat without refrigeration in the tropics this question was actually quite important to us.

The answer to your question is, "It depends". If the egg has never been refrigerated some people say it will stay fresh longer than if it has been refrigerated and then taken out of the fridge.

If you turn the egg over ever couple of days, it will actually last for several weeks and be quite acceptable for baking, even without refrigeration, though quality will suffer.

These links give more information. I hope this helps.

Free Spirit correct. As an egg age at room temp. in water if it lay on it's side it fresh, if it point up some it getting old but usually still edible, if it float DO NOT crack it open. I would say in a house at room temperature 2 days tops, outside in the heat............it will hatch in 21 days. and if you soak it in vinegar maybe a day......it will bounce. May want to ask your science teacher on the time frame for a rubber egg.

Like the answer before mine - put the egg in a full glass of water:

If the egg lies at the bottom on its side, the egg is fresh.
If the egg sinks, but with one end up, it's getting old but is still edible.
If the egg floats at all, it's time to go buy some fresh ones

If I had eggs sitting at room temperature I would throw them out after 2 hours!

3-4 weeks (how do you think it lasts long enough to hatch a chick?) just make sure it's cooked thoroughly.
