follow this guide for windows xp installation....i do this every day so you cant go wrong
1) insert your xp disc and when the welcome screen appears exit it,this will become apparent later
2) restart windows and when the computer boots up press delete to enter set-up,then go into b.i.o.s settings and set boot order so your cd-rom(or dvd) to boot up first, make c second and a third, then press esc and save and exit set-up
3)windows will then resrat again and when prompted"press any key to boot from cd"
4)windows will then go through the motions of loading all the files it needs to install xp,after about 3 minutes you will be given a installation set up screen where you can pick the partition you wish to install xp on,you can also delete partitions and create partitions, its quite easy to do,i would recommend you create 2 partitions,so if you have a 80gb hard drive ,each partition will be 40gb,to do this delete your exixting drive first ,and then create partition remembering to enter half the size of your present hard drive, and then enter, you will then have to do this again for your 2nd partition
5)once you have your partitions set up,pick c drive to install xp on and press enter, then you need to format it,windows will ask you wether to use ntfs(recommended) or fat32,pick ntfs(quicker) and enter, windows will then format your drive and then load files on to your drive
6)once at 100% windows will restart(DO NOT press any key again, ignore this message from now on) and then you will see the windows xp screen, just sit back and let xp install all the data it needs.
7) at various stages of installation you will be asked for 1.your windows license key 2.time and date 3.if you have a modem your telephone number 4.and also networking info(ignore)
8)basically just follow instructions for the remainder of installation, remember dont rush, there is no time limit, remember to read all instructions thouroughly and no mistakes will happen
9)when windows has finished,it will restart again(remember do not press any key,i keep on reminding you about this as many users make a mistake with this)you will then see a start up screen, when asked dont set up the internet ,do it later, enter your name and register later, there will be plenty of time
10)you will then see the windows desktop, once it has fully loaded, right click anywhere on the desktop and click properties, this will give you display properties,go to desktop, and then customise desktop, you should then tick ,my computer,my documents, and internet explorer, and then apply, this will put these on to your desktop, also while you are in display, set your screen saver and power options, and also set your screen resolution in settings tab,a good resolution is 1024x768
11)now you need to install all your drivers, you should have these when you got your pc,you need 1.chipset drivers 2.graphic card drivers 3.sound card drivers 4.and all other essential drivers, these vary from p.c to p.c..if you forget one you will remember at a later point when you will need it
12)next install your security software(anti-virus,anti-spyware,service pack 2(this will come in the form of a update)),these are important, and here is a list of some free security software that i install on p.c,s by defualt and i have had no complaints

also try this new anti-spyware program that is good at detecting hard to move spyware(free) (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
13)once you have installed your security software its time to install your broadband router drivers and software(or modem drivers for dial up)this is done last to minimize the risk of infection, and once you have done this you are up and running,
14)once on-line,windows will start to download and install all the updates you need (normally around 50) ,make sure you do this as updates are a important part of your security set-up
15)you are now ready to use windows xp,other software will be installed when you need it,for example, macromedia flash player and abode reader, you can install these yourself to avoid any active x messages in internet explore(just makes things confusing)
