well, it depends on the setting on your camera.
set it to highest resolutions in finest mode, u could end up 3-5MB per shots .. could be more.
take 256 divided by 5mb, u got the answer ..

The entire 256 mb of the memory card won't be available to you since there would be some software loaded.
An 8 mega pixel camera would produce a file between 3 to 6 mb in fine JPEG mode. Remember, it all depends on the lens and the scene. Say if you are shooting a high key image or an image where most of the scene is fog etc, then the file size will be less. If there is a detailed landscape, then the file size will be large.
But you can say typically expect about 40 images. If you shoot in low resolution, then the number of shots will increase.

The answer depends on the specific camera you're using, and on what image quality setting you're using.
On my 8MP Nikon Coolpix 8700, a best quality jpg was about 2.5MB (give or take 300KB) and a RAW image file was always exactly 12.5MB.
So if I shot everything at best quality jpg, I could squeeze 102 pictures on a 256MB memory card.

It all depends on the resolution and what you are taking a picture of. Simple subject with bland background requires less megabytes than a colorful subject with a busy background.
The math is pretty simple. With the resolution set at 8MB you could get up to 32 pictures( 256MB divided by 8MB = 32.25 pictures) with resolution set to 2MB then you could get as many as 128 photos( 256MB divided by 2MB = 128)

It depends on which mode you are shooting in. If you are in the highest resolution setting, it will probably only hold about 25 or so. In a lower resolution setting, it could hold 100 or so, at least.

My camera is 8 MP. I always take max resolution and max quality. 256MB CF card can only hold about 40 pictures.
