during the bake process (assembly line, mass product buns) when the buns go through they're sliced by a machine cutter.
not all go through this of course.
sorry i don't know the mechanical and proper terms for this process.
key it up in google.com if you want to go all the way and research this, who knows you may end up getting free samples from a company who discusses assembly line production of their products.
