I have adopted two dogs from the dog pound and I am very happy I did. Dogs and cats from the pound make great pets.

A pet shop is not the answer. Pet shops breed animals specifically to sell. Buying from a pet shop will only cause demand. Find a local shelter and adopt a pet it's not expensive and a lot of shelters will have many kinds of animals dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, even horses. Get in contact with your local humane society look it up online or in your phone book. You'll be saving a life.

Go to a shelter or humane society...their pets are excellent and pretty inexpensive. Many even have rabbits, hamsters, etc. Otherwise, watch the paper for pets being given away. Steer clear of pet stores...they get their dogs and cats from puppy mills (puppy mills are horrible places). You really need to figure out what kind of pet you want, what kind of care it needs, if you can give it that kind of care, and if you can really afford to care for a pet. There are lots of great resources at the library or online that will help you figure that out. Before you get a pet, you need to do lots of research and be sure you can give them the best home possible. Check out petfinder.com...they have listings of lots of great pets looking for homes.

adopting a pet is a big responsibility and it costs money. have you considered working part time at the humane society and adopting a pet there? they might let you have a pet, and pay for it out of your paycheck. otherwise, look for advertising cards at the local grocery store for people to want to give away pets.

Go to the nearest shelter and find a dog or puppy. There are many purebreds and mixes available. If you don't find what you want at one shelter, go to another or go online to find rescues of a particular breed.
