Here's a part of an Article that i read which i thought might be useful for you:_
"Two cat breeds are often touted as shedding a minimal amount - the Cornish Rex that has short, curly fur that lies close to her body, and the Devon Rex that is similar and has curly fur that can be in a very thin coat across the cat's body. Because of their very short and fine fur, their shedding is not usually noticeable, but they also shed.
The only cats that do not shed fur are the purebred hairless cats, such as the Sphynx. This unusual cat is not totally hairless. She has a fine down on her body, rather like the fuzz on a peach. Some people say the skin of a Sphynx feels like suede or chamois. This breed is rare and it needs a special kind of care, but they are great choice for people with allergies."
Hope it helped!

Well sphnx cats are "hairless" so they don't shed much. Most do have some hair. Even though they are kind of ugly, they are affectionate and are REALLY nice and warm! PS...whoever told you Egyptian Mau's are hairless was wrong...here's a link about them. http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/egyptian.html As far as not shedding much, short-haired cats will tend to shed less than long-haired. Brushing them frequently will help, and there are some foods that reduce shedding. I would recommend going to the shelter and petting a few cats...if they shed a lot, there will likely be a lot of hair coming off of them when you pet them. Also, healthy cats shed less than unhealthy cats and cats with skin conditions. If you're allergic to cats, less shedding won't help...it's the dander you're allergic to. That website I listed has lots of breeds on there...take a look at some of them. But, you should really rescue one from the shelter...they'll love you more for it :).

Hilary is right. Rexes have curly hair and shed less than regular cats and obviously Sphinxes. Getting a short haired cat is no guarantee against shedding as both of mine are short haired and shed like crazy. Daily grooming and good healthy diet will help. Also, some cats have what is referred to as a single coat, which means that they do not have a thick downy undercoat (one of mine is like that) and they shed less dander, but they still shed their top coat. My other cat has a double coat which is wonderful to pet, but boy, does she shed! I would stay away from cats with a double coat if you are worried about dander.
By the way, Egyptian Maos are beautiful cats, but they are not hairless. The cat in Catwoman (sorry, awful movie...beautiful cat) was a Mao. They have spots on their coats like leopards, as do Bengals.

You can try a Cornish Rex. They lack guard hairs and only have fine down like hair. I have one and he sheds about 90% less than my short haired cat. Hairless cats need to bathed or else they get bad skin and leave greasy areas in your home where they spend a lot of time.

Bengal Cats
Bengal's are bred from a cross between a domestic cat and the wild Asian Leopard Cat. They have exotic looking coats that are very soft, smooth, velvety and pelt-like. It sheds minimally in the summer months.Other than that they are practically shed free.
They are known to be well tolerated by people with allergies to pet dander.
We were fortunate to find ours at the local animal shelter. I would suggest you check with your local animal adoption center as they are quite expensive [$350-$1200] to purchase from breeders.

I was told once that short haired domestics don't shed much. I always got my cat at the pound and what ever was about to get put down that was the one for me! :)
