heck out geocacing.com , it is a treasure hunting sort of thing. You go on line, put in you zip-code and it gives you places to go find the geocaches(which contain stuff like toys from happy meals, pens and pencils...) These are things people have left, when you find it you record your data and live something yourself and one thing. You find these treasure using you GPS, the website will give you coordinates and you hike to ind the treasure. Some caches are very kid friendly and not a bad walk to hike, they will tell you the difficulty of the find. I have even found some in city parks and things of that such. But please remember when you are out in wildlife treat it as such and be very careful Th the resources. And always remember Cache IN Trash OUT. Happy Hunting.

You didn't say how long you had. Is this a vacation, an afternoon, a weekend? In New England I can thing of several great adventures to take this time of year. Go to the Connecticut shore, find a parasailing vessel and take them for a ride that they will never forget, if they are not that adventurous, maybe Coney Island for a weekend. Walk Rockefeller plaza in Manhattan, take in the sites and pay respects at ground zero.
A canoe trip to the finger lakes, camping, hiking in the mountains, scratching the dirt at the big dig, use a little imagination and I'm sure you'll come up with something that is family oriented, outdoors, educational and above all together.
Enjoy life, keep it real and hug your children everyday. Every day.

Do you own a home or have an area where you could bury a time capsule? Kids love that stuff. You'de have a great day deciding what to put in, finding the perfect spot to bury it, and you can choose a time to dig it up in ten to twenty years and enjoy another day of laughter when you see what you put in. They're also at the age of petting farms and zoos. You could also do backyard camping it's exciting to sleep outdoors and if it get scary or they need potty and snack breaks your a few feet from home. Have fun

You have some good white water rafting trips in the Northeast. My son (whos now 5) started white water rafting when he was 2 and loves it. We only would take him on guided tours class 3 and below. Theres also some amazing waters in your area for canoe/camping trips. (That might be boring for the little one though.)
