Do you make it clear to them that you have a boyfriend that you love? Be upfront with them.
As for just wanting friends... would you approve of your boyfriend having many friends that were women? Think about it...
You're in college now... I am sure you can find a lot of girls to be friends with.

Well if you love this guy then I suggest that you NOT give your number out. We both know that it will lead to other things later on as you go through school. Would you mind if he got other girls number and called them while you were gone? You are being tested right now, so dont give in if you really love dude.
