AVG has a good personal use Anti-Virus product available at: http://free.grisoft.com
Avast Antivirus, also for non-commercial use is available at: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Avira AntiVir Personal Edition is also available for download at http://www.free-av.com , I have not used this a lot and would welcome other comments on it.
The above products include active background scanning modules!
Bitdefender has an excellent scanner and removal tool but does not have any active background protection in the free version that is available at: http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html

Most of them are junk and may also have spyware attached.
Look at the ads in the paper. Norton and McAffee are always having sales with 100% rebate at the big electronics stores. Go with a big name and avoid grief.

Grisoft AVG is great-it was recommended to me by the tech guy in my school over 5 years ago and I use it on both our home computers. It scans and updates daily and is FREE.
