Shame how things have gone and England is no more Great Britain.

Well I have to say no to this question. In our area we have a HIGH crime rate. (Deep South Texas). My neighborhood is quite small but we all know each other. We inform each other when we will be out of town, we tend to each others pets, pick up mail and newspapers, watch out for the children, yell at anyone speeding through our streets, etc. We have a few people who work nights and when they are off they keep an eye on things around our streets at night. but it's not like a job, we do it because we care about each other. This is not an UP-scale neighborhood, or gated community, we have run off, teenagers doing drugs, thieves stealing lawn items (even shrubs, hoses, benches). Thank God, that we all care.

i guess it depends on the idividual. My neighbour went to stay with relatives for a few days, i was concerned as the windows were wide open & the house was completely unsecure however in some area's your own neighbours would rob you if you left a window open.
I smile at everyone i pass in the street & I look out for my neighbours but your right people have become reclusive. We live in such a multi-racial society I think people tend to keep themselves to themselves these days.

I live in a neighbourhood watch area. One of my neighbours get on with me, and we look after each others houses when one is on holiday. However, our other neighbours don't get on so well. It is true what you say about what people do in the street. It shows how corrupt the world we live in is now (except in some places, like switzerland, where people say hi to each other!)

Of course Neighbourhood watch is dead .
Just imagine the complaints the Police would get from the YOB,S They would complain it was infringing their Human Rights to go about their usual business of causing vandalism and beating old People up and generally making a complete nuisance of themselves .

Neighbourhood watch isn't completely dead but it isn't as strong as it used to be. The world has become murkier and it's entirely possible for you to think you're helping someone only for that someone to turn round and complain and or sue you. People tend to evaluate situations better these days and if it's judged risker to get involved then it would be to walk away then walk away is what they will do.

Neighbourhood watch is still alive and kicking, the old curtains twitch with out fail, BUT whether they do anything about crime is debatable, do they care enough to telephone the police? Dunno.
Lets face it in most cases, all you get for doing that is a crime number, not much else. All you are doing is helping them with their statistics!!! (Mutter mutter mutter!)

I am lucky where I live we all watch out for one another, especially the older folk, but you are right, but usually if you smile at a person, they usually will smile back, of course depending where you live!
