This is my husband's first deployment; he's been gone for just a few weeks but already it feels like months! What do you do to occupy yourselves?

I went to school, stayed busy with my kids, volunteered at the school, volunteered with cub scouts, stayed busy with my family readiness group.

Go to ACS and ask then where are some good places to volunteer. You could also volunteer at the vet's office on post, they always need people to walk the animals.

I'm not a spouse but I'm in Afghanistan now for 5 more months and am married to the greatest military spouse on the planet. She made a plan and stuck with it. If you live on or by a base you have a few things to help you through deployment. ACS is a great place to start. They can give you information on anything from jobs, hobbies or volunteer work. MRW is another place to go. My wife and I have a bet about who is going to be in better shape after I get back. She lifts weights and swims. Your FRG (family readiness group) should be a lot of help also. I don't know your situation but they can keep you informed of local events and they are all in the same boat. Many of them for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th times. You will find some true experts there. All I can say is get off your butt and get going. It will make the time go so much faster. Staying home and being sad won't do you or your spouse any good at all. Go get um!! best wishes

lostokieboy is wrong! I have the best spouse!!! (just kidding, I am sure that both of our wives are great!)

I am in the Navy and I will go on deployment soon. We decided that she needed to focus on her career during this time and spend more time attending training classes and seminars. We will communicate over the Internet.

Traveling is also a good thing. Hobbies and sports?? Dance classes are good, too! Is there something that you always wanted to do, but could not because you were married and your spouse did not share the same interest? My wife for example loves art, but I can only draw stick people, so she wants to take an art class.

If you are interested in personal enrichment classes, go to the local community college and look at the personal enrichment classes. They only cost about $50.00 and they last about 4-10 weeks depending on the class. I have put a link to the ones in my hometown Jacksonville, FL. However, most town have similar programs.

Good Luck and thanks for supporting your Soldier /Airman/Sailor/Marine/Costguardsmen/Coastguards/woman

My hubby was deployed Nov. 05' and will be home Nov. 15th this year. I know exactly what your going though. It is very lonely, and then you feel guilty for going to do anything in case he emails or calls. I started scrapbooking, and sending him finished ones and he loved it! Get a PT job and if your on base do things with the FRG. Find other Military wives to hang out with. You can message me! Whatever you do don't let it get to you, even on days it seems it will never end. He will be home soon, keep thinking like that. Its tough, and I am proud of you for handling it....Good luck!!

That just happened to my friend. Im just there for her. Like we go shopping, get a drink, watch a movie....turn to your reliable freinds. Go out and join groups. Find out what you love to do & what your hobbies are like crafts or paint a couple of rooms in your house. Go shopping at flea markets and find things that go with your new rooms. Focus on your weight. Like join a gym and if your in tip top shape, keep up with it. Get a makeover,or a massage (we do!) Dye your hair a totally different color. Surprise your hubby when he comes back. Buy a pet. I looove kittens!
