The back stuff sounds like varnish, it goes black when heated. No easy fix nitromors or any other paint remover is the only way. If you are able to remove the wood, you could have it dipped most areas have a professional offering this service.

If its sticky it means some coat(s) hadn't hardened properly before another coat was put on top. Try cleaning it with thinners (if turps subs doesn't work), Once you get rid of the sticky then go back to the nitromors

the tar is probably old varnish, I use a heat gun to remove the paint and some of the varnish, then I spread a water based stripper to disolve the varnish - use a putty knife to remove it then wipe it down thoroughly with water

Use paint stripper and DO NOT sand it off. Use toothpicks to get into small areas and an old toothbrush.

use a heat gun & a small scraper, this will take it doen to the bare wood removing all old paint, includeing lumps & bumps, just like starting on a fresh canvas.

Hot gun will heat off pain then you sand it with a sander. You can hire them for little money and do a good job.

lacquer thinner and steel wool. not paint thinner it's no where near as affective.

White spirit. It is probably bitumen based. It will be messy.
