and should your PTA council pay for it? I find that there is rarely soap in the kid's bathrooms...nor do they use it...and the conditions of the bathrooms are often appalling...all parents should send their kids to school with a bottle for their desks but I had them put up dispensers in each class and our council pays for one or two fill ups per year. I think this is how to combat illness in schools...thoughts? Would you do this and do you carry hand sanitizer around with you? We all know that school season means viruses and flus so will you do your part in preventing the spread of disease?

it's on the supply list for my class, i keep a bottle for the kids to use after every restroom, sneeze, or cough, i also make them use it before they come to group with me because i catch everything they have. I wish we had a PTA!!! that sounds like a nice setup you have there. Unfortunately i teach in a very low-income community and there is no money for it, I'm lucky if my students show up with crayons let alone the sanitizer!

Many classrooms have a sink in the room with soap and usually the teacher makes all the children line up and wash hands before lunch. The school should always make sure there is soap in the restrooms - but only in the younger groups should the teachers or teacher's aids monitor the child's handwashing. The children should be taught proper handwashing at home and by the 2nd grade they should be able to do this by themselves.

A preoccupation with germ killing can actually have a negative consequence - that negatively affects the immune systems of our children. Some pediatricians actually suggest exposing your children to others that are sick to build up their immunity. I personally support somewhere in the middle. I'm not ready to ask for trouble - but I think a completely germ free environment is not healthy either

Hand sanitizer may help a little, but it doesn't replace hand washing. The only way to definitely get rid of germs is proper hand washing. Maybe you need to bring it to the schools attention about no soap in the bathrooms, and the school nurse should educate the children about proper hand washing, maybe she could give a demonstration as to how many germs really live on there hands, but these teachings shouldn't end at school. The parents need to be as educated as the children do.

sure its a good idea but like most good ideas it falls apart when actialy implemented.

the hand sanitizer despencers would be just as empty as bathroom soap despencers for the same reasons, and even more so if your only gunna fill em twice a year, those things would need daily, or atleast weekly refills, and do you really wanna pay for that?

last idea like this was avout tissues, and it was adopted, and every one now brings 2 boxes of tissues to school on the first day of the year in this area, but alas, there are rarly any tissues left by the time winter is in full effect... and guess what, thats when kids need tissues.

Yes they should. Lately there has been 24 people who got the flu in our school. So the principle made an announcement for everyone to bring hand sanitizer or sanitizer wipes. Our bathrooms are clean though.

Agreed! This is a great idea. Have the kids use it each time they come into the classroom. Kids pick up most of their illnesses in the school and this could definitely help prevent the spread of viruses.

I think it's a great idea, however, more money from the parents. As it is public schools constantly ask parents for money for the littlest things, almost every day. Not all of us are rich. Personally, I would have my daughter bring a little bottle of sanitizer with her and use it when she needs to.

Oh yeah, they definitly should. Their is like NEVER soap in the bathroom and we have hand dryers instead of paper towels, gross, plus with kids leaving there nasty gum everywhere, it's disgusting when it gets stuck on your shoe and there's nothing to clean your hands with after you get it out.
