Yes he can but you have to condition your dog first just like a person would. He can't start out running 1/2 mile with you, you have to start by taking him walking, slowly increase the distance, and then start a little running with him. Just take it in steps and he should be fine - the exercise will make him a lot healthier!

My sister has a chihuahua and I think if you run slow, he could keep up. I would worry about stressing him too much though. With the extra weight and the CHi's fragile leg bones, I wouldn't risk it. Plus you don't want him to hate it. It would be very bad to have him run from you everytime you get the leash.
It suggest you go for a nice walk instead. Walk briskly enough that he gets exercise, but slow enough that he is not overtaxed by the effort.
Also, consult you vet for ideas on how to exercise your dog safely.
And from Look-Who's-Talking Department: Your dog is fat because you feed him more calories than he burns. There are two ways to correct this: less food, and more exercise. Consult your vet about a safe weight loss program for the little guy.

i would say take him for a walk not run. If he is overweight, you need to put him on a low calorie diet eg. hills science diet R/D from ur vet clinic. Letting him run will place too much pressure on his joints, and he may end up doing a cruciate ligament, or something even worse. Take it easy with him, im sure he would love to go for a walk. He needs to lose weight before he has serious health problems.

Yes, you could take him for a run. Make stops very frequently and give it some water. Play with it a little or let it rest at each stop.

A chihuahua will not be able to keep up with you. Maybe just take him for a couple of brisks walks a day.

No way! There tiny little legs and delicate knee joints can't take that! push him in a running stroller with you, and take him out for your cool down walk home.
