Before u read, i would just like to say that i am agnostic and was just curious about this.

In Ramayana (Hindu Mythology), it is said that Lord Rama was helped by an army of "Vanaras" who are inteligent monkeys. Could these Vanaras be the Neanderthal men or an unknown evalutionary branch of primates?
I heard that modern man co-existed peaceully along with Neanderthals. Could Ramayan be the story (Possibly changed over time to the current version) of an incident which happened during that time?

Interesting idea, but incredibly unlikely.

Neanderthals - definitely not. Their range was in Europe and some of the middle east nearer Africa, but they never made it as far as India. Homo sapiens co-existed with H. neanderthalensis only in this region.

Homo erectus did make it as far as east asia but was extinct long, long, long before humans were writing the Ramayana.

An implausible idea is that Homo floresiensis, the dwarf humans recently discovered in Indonesia (often called the "hobbits" nowadays) could be what you descibe. But again, H. floresiensis went extinct about 13,000 years ago and the theory goes that the dwarfing of H. floresiensis occurred due to isolation on on the small island of Flores, so it is very, very unlikely that they could have ever existed in India or Sri Lanka.

Finally, the earliest plausible data for the Ramayana is around 500 BC. Even if you think of it as an oral tradition dating beyond that it is very unlikely it could have been consistently passed down as long as would be necessary for your hypothesis to be correct.
