No, school don't know what they are talking about with that.
It means a dark skinned girl. If you're calling your wife/girlfriend/daughter that it can also go as My dark skinned girl.
It has nothing to do with hair color or black people. That is a completely different word. People answering this were taught in high school spanish and assume it was right. Do not try to speak high school spanish to a hispanic. They won't understand most of it.

The adjective "moreno/a" means dark-colored. If applied to a person, it usually designates a dark-haired, dark-skinned female person. The suffix "-ita" is a diminutive, so it referes to a girl or young woman.
However, "morenita" is also the name of a native South American fish belonging to order Gymnotiformes, a relative of the electric eel.

Some people use it to mean Black people,, but most people use it to mean a brunette with a medium complexion,,, in between fair and very dark. the -ita at the end makes it a term of endearment.

Morenita comes from "moreno", which means brown.
So, "morenita" is a girl with brown skin.
Now, don't think this is a racial slur. On the contrary! It is a term that is used tenderly and lovingly.
