If you talk about something, with someone, then move on... you are likely to forget it. However, if you talk with someone about something, then you re-visit that topic later in the day, you are so much more likely to remember it forever.

So, your teachers give you homework to reinforce what was discussed in class.

Sorry, no big conspiracy.

Most homeschooling parents don't give homework. The kids just do their work during their work time.

If you're not homeschooled but still writing this in the homeschooling section, you are given homework so that you will learn to pay attention and ask things in the right place.

Probably to keep you ne'er-do-wells off the streets. But seriously, it varies teacher to teacher. Some of them just really want you to learn the material. Others think that their class is the only one that matters and don't consider you could have lots of work for the other courses as well.

If you want to be good at the piano, you have ot practice. The teacher can teach you where to put your fingers but in order to get good, you need to practice.

Homework is practice. You use what the teacher has taught you and you get better at it.

To continue where they left off at school, so that you will learn even more. Without education it is hard to get anywhere, and it makes you practice what you have gone over in class.
