if it is just a sensible answer give it a positive rating.
if you think it is sensible & correct , choose it as best answer , there by giving that person 10 points. most of the time people answer to get points.
if you really want to write to that person saying thanks. if that person cannot be contacted ( ? ) he/she wants to be left alone.

When you choose a Best Answer, there's a comments box in which you can write thanks. If it was a sensible answer that wasn't chosen as Best, you can still add your thanks to that person/people in the same box, or check their Profile Page to see if you can send an e-mail.

If you don't choose it as best, you might be able to contact the person, thank them for their answer, explain why you didn't choose them as best.
Go to there answers profile, and see if there is a "contact me" link. Then you can email them. I have received emails from people in this way.
You have not activated this yourself. Why? if you don't do this, no one can communicate with you. And you can't complain that they don't let you communicate with them.

If you want to, you can try and look on their profile and then contact the person. After you have rated it as best answer :)

...you can vote h/er best answer, and there is a place for you to comment. You can also add to your comments if you think of something else to say. Also you can click on their icon to see if you can contact them.

Vote for their answer. If they have an email on their profile, it will say contact so and so and be highlighted in blue. Click on it and yahoo will forward your thanks. You could add a comment of thanks when you vote their answer as best.
