Once when I was a child, I got really sick on a road trip out of town. We stopped and I went to the little girls room and threw up and everything else. I started getting really sick with fever and everything and it was determined that I had a stomach virus. We were almost to our destination so the elders decided to push on. My uncle, a minister, got in the back seat with me and prayed and prayed. He put one hand on my stomach and the other on my forehead and boy did he pray. Everyone in the car was "Amen" ing. Within a matter of minutes, the fever stopped, the sweats stopped, the stomach ache and the headache all stopped. Afterwards, I thanked everyone and then thanked the Lord for hearing their cries.

"Is any among you sick? Let him call for the presbyters of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven" (James 5:14-15).

This sacrament is now called the Anointing of the Sick and a person does not have to be dying to receive it.

Any one physically or mentally ill, aged and infirm, or about to receive surgery can receive this sacrament of healing.

The liturgical actions in the Anointing of the Sick include the following principal elements:
+ Scripture is read.
+ The priests of the Church in silence lay hands on the sick.
+ They pray over them in the faith of the Church
+ They anoint them with oil blessed by the bishop.

The effects of the Anointing of the sick are:
- Uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church
- The strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness

With love in Christ.

Because it is how God communicates his healing grace to the sick.

Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the
presbyters (priests) of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:14,15)

"Laying on of hands" is a Biblical action, however, there is no Biblical mandate requiring the physical laying on of hands for particular spiritual ministry. Jesus certainly laid His hands on many He healed, however He also healed without laying His hands on people. In fact, there were times when He was nowhere near the vicinity of those He healed. "The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed" (Matthew 8:8).

Undoubtedly the laying on of hands in the early church was a means of connecting the message with the messenger, or the spiritual gift with the gifted giver. It provided a "sign" authenticating he thru whom the physical manifestation of a spiritual gift was bestowed. Jesus said it would be involved in the gift of healing in the overall signs of believers as they went about ministering the gift of healing. We need to understand very carefully that there are no magical Biblical formulas for the ministry of the Church. Laying on of hands has no power in itself. Laying on of hands is only used by God when it is done in agreement with God's will/word.
