God and spirits are two different things. And most people don't say it like you did: 'I don't believe in spirits, but I believe in god, and god is dead' - people generally either believe in god, or don't, or they believe that there was a god, but god is dead. Not both at the same time. And spirits are a completely different thing than gods. Sorry.

If you mean Christians then it's because they're conditioned to believe that their 'God' is not a spirit, but the supreme being, and that all other spirits are a distraction from the 'true path' that they are following, or 'false idols' as they call them. I'm with you when you say that God in the accepted sense is dead, but I am very much a spiritual person and I think there's a whole lot out there that we haven't even begun to understand yet.

Which people say that they don't believe in spirits - and who said that God was dead?
God is three people in one person.
God the Father is omnipotent.
God the Son, Jesus, died and was resurrected on the third day and lives.
God the Spirit lives in us.
Are you perhaps talking of 'ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties - and things that go bump in the night?

Indeed people are full of contradictions! Your example is a good one, another example is people telling you they are not in the least bit superstitious while stepping on the road (Where they're not safe from cars) In order to avoid walking under a ladder on the pavement! That one always amuses me because i !!! Walk under the ladder yet of all ... I do admit to being a tad superstitious!

As for not believing in spirits .... I must confess i used to laugh at anyone narrating their encounters with spirits, would cry out "O grow up these things are just not true" Until my agency sent me on a few night shifts in a place where i bumped into weird residents (two of them different nights) and asked myself how on earth i hadn't noticed them before, thinking surely their names and photographs would be on the Kardex (Drugs register) so asked staff who told me that the lady in the blue dressing gown had been a resident until she died 5 years prior to my shift and indeed! used to wear same dressing gown, hair long, white and unruly and slept in the room where i'd seen her enter! As for the gentleman who appread to struggle walking ... He was only dead 2 years beforehand!!! After that ... I did have to admit that i had been wrong all the time. So maybe ... Some of those who don't believe in spirits will simply need to wait until they bump into one (Or more)

People don't "believe" out of fear. Even "believers", who rant and rave about the Holy GHOST, and Holy SPIRIT. God is a SPIRIT.
Then "drop thier pants" when you talk about an EVIL spirit.
But everyone has had some type of experience that they know
shows there is more going on than meets the eye.

I believe in God but why would anyone believe in spirits and not God? I believe that there are many spirits out there. There's the Holy Spirit of God, there are God's angels and then there are Satan and all of his demons(who trick people with their lies). That sums up the spirit world. If you are talking to or communicating with spirits it is one of those. If you have rejected the true and living God then your aren't communicating with the good guys....

To keep people loyal to a belief system requires rigid rules, otherwise the people will start to think for themselves. The belief system has to be based on something finite, such as a collection of ancient texts.
Belief in spirits is often based on personal experiences, and these cannot be controlled and manipulated by religionists. Therefore religionists discourage their followers from belief in spirits.
This leads to a paradox in some religions. They preach that life can continue beyond physical death, yet do their best to ignore any evidence to support this.

As for spiritis well I would love to think that my loved ones are around me in spirit, I miss them. But somehow I suspect we just wink out. Sorry.

All humans have different mental and spiritual capacity. While younger we may not be able to investigate and decide which religion is right for them. As we grow, our mind matures and we can then make choice about our spiritual path. To meet with a certain religious preference has to do with our past connection with it. For example, if we have no strong affinity with Buddhism, we are not likely to meet and accept this teaching. So it is well to just let people grow their way through. Ours is to just proclaim our knowledge of what we know and allow others to make to decisions.
Take care.
