The Labor Standards Act states that working hours are to be no more than 40 hours per week and no more than eight hours per day.

Working hours may exceed the above limits, because the Labor Standards Act permits the 'working hour adjustment system', under which enterprises are permitted to increase working hours during busy periods and decrease during slack periods.

Employers must give employees rest periods of more than 45 minutes if employees work more than 6 hours, and more than 60 minutes for more than 8 hours work.

The Labor Standards Act prescribes that employers requiring employees to work beyond the legally prescribed working hours must pay extra wages.

The Labor Standards Act states that all work performed over and above the legal working hours and all night-work must be paid at a level of at least 25% above regular wages and that all work performed on legal holidays must be paid at a level of at least 35% above regular wages.

The extra pay rate jumps up to 50% or more if overtime work extends into late at night.(10 p.m. to 5 a.m.)

Women as a whole and youth under 18 years of age are, in principle, prohibited from night work. However, women of 18 years of age or more are permitted to do night work in some specified categories, like in agriculture and forestries, fisheries, domestic animal industries, public health services and telephone operators.

In addition, to promote equal rights for men and women, to expand women's occupation, women over 18 years of age are allowed to do night work. Employers have to consider their child care, nursing and health condition when employers want women to work at night.

Men of 16 years of age or more are also permitted to do night work if they work in shifts.
