It must be hard but nothing is impossible.
If you know people in each country you visit, and can stay at their homes, then it should be possible.
Concerning locomotion, go on foot, or by bike, it is much less expensive.

I reckon it is possible if you plan it well and in advance. Three years ago I globetrotted around the world on a pre-booked holiday and it only cost me about £1500. That was taking in California, Hawaii, Australia and Hong Kong. Book with STA travel (if you are under 26 you can join). I have been with them for years and have had many trips to all sorts of far flung destinations, for fairly inexpensive fares.

Go to your local library or book store. Check out the ___ on ___ dollars a day books. It used to be Spain on $10 a day, or Portugal on $15 dollars a day. Now it's more like $80, for whatever country. That should give you some ideas.
Also, my father has commented that it's much cheaper to visit a country if you live like a citizen of the country rather than as a tourist. For example, don't eat out. Buy some groceries, and eat at your place of lodging.

We find Barns and Noble as the best library- you can sit there and read all of the books and take notes,
