This is an interesting question and I think the answer depends largely on what exactly do you mean by "human values?"

My immediate reaction was that they SHOULD be one and the same. Unfortunately, they're not.

Then, however, I thought perhaps you're refering to what humans have come to value: money, power, etc. In that case, neither is more important because they amount to the same thing.

Now that is a beautiful question. First of all, this question arises if religion becomes a barrier to human values. Religion is looked upon as many as a set of rituals and only that related with God, temple, church or mosque.

Religion is not just a set of rituals. It a way of life. The ultimate aim of religion itself is to purify man and help him develop good values and forbid evil. What is religion which acts against human nature and kills values ? What is religion without values and morals ?

So ultimately, i mean to say that religion is a pathway to develop good values and that any religion acting as a barrier to that is not worth calling a religion.

Thank you. Hope i have answered your question......

I say Human Values. But Values differ between different groups of humans. Which to some degree account for the different forms of religions. humans tend to spend their life fighting for the Values they believe in.

Didn't realize it was an either/or situation. If religion isn't a primary source of human values, what is? Isn't "Do onto others as you would have done onto yourself" a human value? Isn't "Thou shall not kill" a human value? Any religion that doesn't teach love and respect of others is not a religion, but a private club.

Human values are based upon religious beliefs. To me, you can not have human values if you are an atheist because there would be a flaw in your logic. If there is no God then there is no such thing as right and wrong. Therefore human beings have no value.

I'd say a respect for our fellow humans wouldn't harm us. Religion is unnecessary. We just need to respect each other. If only that were possible... I can never respect people who smoke, do drugs, are mean, drink too much, harm others for no reason, deny logic, and consider others lesser people, and unfortunately, there are too many who do these things.

Why is this an either / or question?
A decent religion would teach human values.
