Why do people react as if someone chewed off their butt when questioned about their religious beliefs?

Like everything in life, dont you think there is a need to explore, innovate and improve our religious beliefs. These religions are just about 2000 years old whereas life can be traced back to millions of years. Maybe some other better and contemporary religion wishes to evolve but we are so stuck of with what we have that we dont open up to it? Why are we humans so narrow minded

Most don't act as if someone chewed off their butt when questioned. That reaction is usually reserved for when people insult, ridicule, or condemn their religious beliefs. Sometimes, people do this in the form of a question, like: "Why are you so ignorant as to actually believe THAT? Can't you see you're completely wrong?" That's not /questioning/ someone about their beliefs. That's attacking someone. And most people will take offense. And sometimes, it's not even so blatant, but people can - and do - get very touchy about their innermost beliefs. That's normal, and to be expected. (Some get touchier than others... and some are downright hostile even toward innocent questions, but from what I've seen on Yahoo Answers, "innocent" questions are few and far between.)

And not everyone sees the need to explore, innovate, or improve their beliefs. If you're happy with what you've got, why change it? Especially if you don't like what the next person claims is "better". Is it narrow-minded? Depends. Some never even consider that their faith might be outdated or wrong. Others do, and it only reconfirms what they already believe.

In general people hold their beliefs very close so what may seem narrow minded to one may be something entirely different to another.

It may also be that when you question a person's religious belief you are questioning their basic center in life so in a way you are questioning everything they hold important and dear. To some persons that may seem like an attack on their very existence.

The way you phrased the lead-in to your question just tickles me. ;)

Some people are so absorbed (brainwashed?) in their beliefs that they find it horrific for anyone to believe in things that they don't. I don't understand what crawled up their asses, either. I do wish that more people would just accept others' beliefs as sacred to the individual, though, and stop attacking and/or proselytising at them. But then, that would be an ideal world, which we don't get this time around. :)

most humans are blind... blind to what's all around them, they don't tolerate anythig or anyone, i'd give ya my religion, but it seems that i'm the only one that has it, for it has no name, but a hystory longer that the human world, it can answer ALL questions, and dose not prohibit free thought, yet it ENCOURAGES it, for the smarter and independent people are, the less are they blind, i'm not human, so i can speak freely about whom i chose and what i chose, i don't abide your rules, neither do i believe your religions....amusing how one can know so many out of some simple words.... amusing is the fact that you will take me for a nutjob and ignore my words, amusing are the humans, busy as bees to shield themselves from all others, your walls cannot hide your shame, people may die.... aeons may pass... but in the end i know.... i shall.... forever.... last...
