I know how to soldier and i know its the horizontal or vertical IC but i don't know how to locate it and what to do if its bad. i want to fix it myself, Seen suggestions about resoldiering the IC but what if its broken and not a soldier problem. Everything else works fine.

Your chances of fixing this fault are maybe 70%. To find the vertical chip look at the deflection coils ( or yoke on the tube neck ) there will be 4 wires run down to the main circuit board , the wires end in a 4 pin plug, 2 of the wire are spaced a little apart and the other 2 are nearer together, follow the 2 that are near together under the circuit board and you will see that they go to a chip that has a heat sink on it, heat sink is usually made of metal, right , get your soldering iron fired up and re solder the chip neatly without any blobs of solder shorting out the other pins !!Now try the set ! if it works you have fixed your own TV, if it doesn`t well then you have now added to your experience !!! Try hitting the side of the tv and if the picture comes back you have a loose solder joint somewhere on the circuit board.

thats vertical deflection failure, you most likely have bad solder connections on the vertical output IC and/or a bad vertical IC
