Sleep paralysis is not all that uncommon - pretty scary though. Very often, people feel as though there is someone else in the room with them. It is one of the symptoms of narcolepsy (excessive daytime sleepiness) but can occur in otherwise perfectly healthy people. See a doctor if you are worried.

I've been having these kind of dreams ever since a was a chid. I still have now, at the age of 26, and i'm sure that i'll have them for the rest of my life.. It's very uncomfortable and strange to experience them.. but perfectly normal. When you get into the stage of paralysis, all of your muscles are blocked, less the musculature of you chest(which allows the heard to beat and the lungs to breathe), and you eye lids.. that is the stage call ed REM-Rapid Eye Movement. Is weirder when you actually see the room exactly as it was before going to sleep.. You see the room from the exact place where you put your head on the pilow.. but you cannot move, or speak.. and sometimes.. can't even breath properly. A dream in a dream within a dream.. I don't know how much is more likely nearby the truth ..are you conscious, wide awake.. or in a deep sleep..

Since it hasn't happened before, you might want to consider that the extreme sense of itching you have could be releasing chemicals/hormones into your system. Or maybe your ethereal body is just avoiding your current physical distress.
The above is not an answer for normal sleep paralysis. But your physical distress AND any medications that you use for it can have side effects.

i've had that for over 30 years, and I just found out the name of it on yahoo answers! It's very scary, and I would have several l false wakenings, one after the other.
And sleep paraylsis, every time I fall asleep, I would have like 8 or 9 times a night until i finally give up on sleeping. it sucks.
i always try to get out of there when my body is becoming stiff, because I waited around once when I was three-years-old, and the image I saw haunts me to this day. I try to think about the real world and my bed, and that usually helps me.

while your physical body is sleeping your etherical body is playing. when you try to wake up, your etherical body is too busy having fun to get back into your physical body. that's why you feel paralized. before you go to sleep at night, say outloud "etherical body, when i'm ready to wake up, please be ready". it should stop.
if you watch a baby sleep you can (i can, any way) watch the childs' etherical body leave and go play and come back.
