Both the ones you mention are abbreviations of longer names, from Nicholas and Jacob. Most names can be shortened down like that - Dave, Bill, Joe, Dick, Bob, etc. But if you want one-syllable names in their own right, how about Mark, Seth, Carl, Luke, Paul or James?

search "good four letter male names" on google. you'll probably get a ton of names. you could also try three and five letter names in the search. good luck :)
