Original "Moped" was a motorized bicycle. Hence, the name Mo and Ped means pedal just like the bicycle, at least until the motor kicks in and then go on your merry way!. Present day mopeds have kick starts or even self-starts so the word moped is a misnomer -:)

It's named after the reaction some kid gave after getting the "bike" he'd got for his birthday. He moped all day long.

That's a combinationof two words....motor or pedal bike...you pedal a bike with a motor...moped.
