More than just having people show up for work, having a standard times allows shipments to be coordinated as well as train travel, auto travel, and airplane travel. Communication is the basis of all of this, telling everybody what is going to happen at the same moment.

Without a Standard Time the co-ordinated activities of many distant people could not occur. Deliveries would occur when stores were closed. Employees would never know when to report for work, or when their work day was finished and so on....
