Hi.

Really good question. WebMD has several articles on treatment. The link to 'results' of my search on 'ascites' is included at the end. The results in several articles. Try these:

http://www.webmd.com/hw/brain_nervous_system/hw198220.asp

http://www.webmd.com/hw/liver_disease/tf6388.asp

http://www.webmd.com/hw/liver_disease/aa67670.asp

Be sure to consult a doctor BEFORE undergoing treatment. WebMD and about.com have online experts that you can talk to.

God bless!

Be very wary of medications that may cause more damage to the liver. The Liver produces albumin and ascites is a sign of a protein imbalance between the peripheral circulation. So to treat this follow the diet advice and medication advice suggested by your specialist!

There are medications for ascites. One is Aldactone. It helps a LOT, but has a ton of unpleasant side effects, one of which is a horrible, horrible tatste in your mouth. My husband took it for ascites caused by pancreatic cancer. His ascites would get so bad, he would have to have a small catherter inserted into his abdomen and drain it...but the Aldactone did make these episodes less frequent. Talk to your doctor about medication to reduce the fluid...

I have had ascitis - very painful! I was so huge that I had to have my abdomen drained. Please consult with a physician as soon as possible. I ended up with pericarditis, pnemonia & a bunch of other stuff too! Go to a good internal doc, or a University center. Is your cirrhosis caused by Hep C? If so - please research current available treatments. Please go to a doctor NOW!
