In my view Alien8ed was about the closest in simple terms. However my view does not make it the right view for you or anyone else OK. I may be wrong.
I read that "the earth was without form and void". That tells me humankind sourced in the earth, the dust must be reformed to conform to a specific standard. In my view this standard is the result of a rebirth or born from above which was written about.
The dead do not go through this because they by their own rejection refuse to accept the provided provisions. This rejection makes it clear from one view they do know nothing or they would have accepted the provisions. They no nothing about what could be and are willing to accept what is here and now thus they remain dead to the truth and true knowledge. Those who do accept the rebirth are filled with the knowledge and reformed to conform to the declared required standards in an endless growth.
To support my view I consider that My God is the God of the living [Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob] not the God of the dead. Also it is stated that those who do accept the provisions will not taste death.
Do give it some thought and I hope it will help. Have a good day.

1. Jesus said "I tell you now, you will be with Me in heaven on this day" because the thief believe that Jesus is son of God and he have the power for people salvation.
2. The dead know nothing, means that the soul of the dead is no longer in the world, what remained is only their body, so how can they know or feel without soul?

It means that when you die you are dead. There is a misconception with the dead. People think that you go to Heaven or Hell instantly when you die and there is no scriptural basis for this. The Bible clearly says that the dead are just dead as if in a sleep and will be resurrected when Christ returns if they died a Christian and the rest of the dead will not be resurrected until the thousand year reign of Christ on earth. Thats why the Bible says do not talk to the dead for they can not hear you.

I dont see any contradiction. The Lord told the thief he would go to heaven because :
1) The thief repented of his sins and Jesus knows this.
2) Jesus was declaring that by His sacrifice, mankind can now go to heaven through His salvation.
Ecclesiastes 9:5
For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten.
"The living" as those who live in Christ and walk in His ways, and their reward would be to be with Him in heaven.
We, who walk by Christ, know that we will die, but we also know we are resurrected in Him, and will live on with Him in heaven.
As for "the dead", they did not receive Christ into their lives when they had the chance so they have to face death. It's not literal "know nothing". Its more like they didn't know Christ personally. So they shall die and experience death in hell.

Im gonna take a stab at this. I believe that "the dead know nothing"
would be referring to the fact then when a person is spiritually dead they are completely devoid of Gods divine plan.
But really I would need more info to correctly decipher.
I think it is along these lines.

Maybe it refers to the physical body. Do what you wish with that body it knows nothing because its dead. The invitation of Jesus to the thief is for his spirit not to his physical body which will eventually die from the cross.

when scripture talks about "knowing" something, they really mean experiencing. what god's saying is that the dead are dead. They are not experiencing life any longer. Think of when he means nothing as really meaning "nothing of life". so almost litterally, hes just syaing that the dead are no longer apart of life, which doesnt mean theyre not in heaven

Maybe it means they know nothing about what's going on on earth because they are no longer absorbed in the daily activities.
