School doors are set up so that it is impossible to lock someone in a class. Students can be locked out of a class, but never in. (fire laws).
Our high school does send students to an ISS room for one period if they are late (1 second is late, sorry.) There they receive the work for the period by e-mail from the teacher and are allowed to complete it for 70% credit. They generally are late once or twice. This policy was developed a number of years ago after two serious fires that turned out to have been set by students who were not where they were supposed to be.
The school has high academic standards for all students and the achievement gap between our various populations has been significantly reduced. One of the reasons is the broken windows theory. If you let little things get by (like tardiness), then bigger problems happen. (A school that does not take charge of tardies would soon have students roaming the school all day and attending class only when they felt like it.)
If you choose to pursue this, please check material send you at the beginning of the school year about your rights, so that you don't give them away by starting with a lawyer. (Yes, if you don't go through all the due process steps as set out, a judge can throw out your case!) Start with the dean, (or assistant principal in charge of discipline), move to the principal, take to someone in the superindents office, then call your school board members. Only after you have presented a calm, reasoned argument as to why you think this policy is flawed (they don't listen to angry rants --they just don't), should you turn to a lawyer.
I hope you can resolve this problem with your school so that your son gets the fine education he deserves.

Wow. I can't believe you dissed garbage men when you spell the way you do.
My suggestion would be to contact your school district's fire marshal. Locking the doors all the time has GOT to be a fire safety violation. We're not even allowed to have things on the doors in my school because the doors are fire exits. If the marshal finds that your child's school is violating fire codes, he/she will put a stop to this school's poor excuse of a tardy policy.

That might be against the fire code....check with the fire dept. If the school board wouldn't do anything, go to your governor....seriously. Or a congressman. They might help. You might contact a lawyer for the legalities of it as well.

You may also want to consider contacting the local media. They might be interested in doing a story about a school that uses these methods.

School's have discipline for a reason! Choose your battles; this one is too trivial to worry about. If you think your children are too superior to pick up trash occasionally make sure they are on time for school. You are doing them a disservice if you teach them that they are too good to do this. One day they'll be married and have to do things they don't like. Ignore their bleating now!
I'm sure that if there was a fire the teacher would unlock the door. You are looking for excuses to vent your spleen on the school.

My high school did the same thing...it teaches a concept of punctuality....but it kinda does seem like the school is using those kids for cheap labour too lol.
