Hi Beverley...I have two cats and a sugar glider (Australian flying squirrel) and they are my family now. The cats sleep with me and the sugar glider sleeps in a pocket pouch I wear while I work during the day (he's nocturnal). The cats go for walks with me on leash and car rides too when I run errands to places where they can come inside to visit. Both cats look after the squirrel like it's their little kitten so they all play together (it's hard to believe, but they have been together since they were all babies at the same time). All of them own the home, however within reason. I need to keep house clean and smelling fresh so we have boundaries too. Squirrels cage is cleaned weekly and the cats use the toilet so that helps. :-)

Yes, we treat our pets that way. We have three dogs and a cat. We love them dearly and they share the house with us. You must, however be the alpha person. In other words the leader of the clan. You can not afford to let them lead you. To do that will be a dis-service to them and leave you in a submissive state.
Someone HAS to be the leader. To help you with this there are many books on the subject. Go to your local library or browse the Internet (look up the Dog Whisperer) on being the Alpha male or matriarch.
You have some learning to do.

Yes, my two dogs and 1 cat are definatley like my children. In fact, I'd rather spend time with my furry kids than most of my human relatives! I keep a large dog pillow and fluffy cat bed in the living room for them to lounge on, although they like to cuddle up next to their humans when watching tv.

I've got a family of rats, and one in particular that I hand-raised since he was no bigger than my pinkie gets full run of the house (found him out in the woods 3 years ago). He likes being around me at night when I'm on the computer so I leave a small thing of water by my computer for him and leftover pieces of my supper that I know he likes. If he's already awake when I'm eating, I let him help himself to my plate. He's got his own bed behind my bedroom door (which he built himself), and he even IMs my friends when I walk away for a split second or while I'm sleeping. (and no, I'm not kidding) I also take him shopping with me. He either goes in my shirt or if he's feeling comfortable, he stays on my shoulder until someone comes around the corner...then he dives back into my shirt. =D

Our pets are treated a bit like children - so if I want to sit somewhere, the cat gets shoved off!

YES! My cat is my baby. I buy him a gift for his birthday and for Christmas. I buy him good food, toys, he has his own little bed in front of the heater. He also sleeps on the sofa and at the dining room table.

They are part of the family but you do have to draw the line somewhere and I would not sit on the floor so my dog could have a seat but I would walk to the end of the earth for him.
