there's no such thing...and just because stalin, mao, and castro are communist, it does not negate the fact that these are committed atheists who have set up atheist nations, and the whole world can see the result...maybe there's a correlation between atheism or communism, who knows? and as for these european leaders who may or may not be atheists, from the news i've heard out of europe in the past few years (attacks on mosques and synagogues, racial unrest, cemetery desecration), i wouldn't be beating my chest in euro-pride....

First, let me state that I consider myself a secular humanist; not an atheist. These definitions become clouded so if you are serious in seeking to understand atheism in its human dimensions, please check out:
www.positiveathesim.org and secular humanism @ wikipedia.org
I truly hope you can find a few minutes to do so and be open to a broader understanding which I trust you would find interesting, if not fascinating.
A number of notable people identified with secular humanism are:
John Dewey
Albert Einstein
John Kenneth Galbraith
Henik Ibsen
Thomas Mann
George Orwell
Bertrand Russell
Carl Sagen
The world is richer for their contributions.
Cheers!

Actually, nowadays Christians are more tolerant than they used to be. You'd be wrong to say all of them are hard-headed. Alot of Christians are open-minded. I'm Christian and I'm tolerant of other religions. I'm not forcing anyone to "get Jesus", I simply give them the choice and I help them understand more about Christianity. People totally have the wrong idea of what a true Christian is.

Many European leaders are, in fact, Atheists. I can't give you any names because it's not really considered a big deal here. So I don't keep tabs on them.
Please don't confuse Atheism with Communism. Then I promise I won't confuse Christianity with the Spanish Inquisition.
---
Edit: What do you mean by World Leader? Would prime ministers suffice? I only know about Swedish prime ministers, and we're hardly a G8 country. But several Swedish PM's have been atheists, most prominently Tage Erlander (social democrat) who was PM 1946-1969. He told the Arch Bishop of Stockholm, "Honestly, Arch Bishop, I don't believe in God". The Arch Bishop replied, "Nevermind, Prime minister, I don't think God believes in you, either".
If you're curious about our religious tolerance, you're welcome to investigate.

spike: Sorry if I hinted that we don't have a lot of intolerant jackasses in Europe, because we do. I conclude there are some in the U.S. as well. The question wasn't about them, however, it was about the existance of religiously tolerant atheist leaders.
