Have moved to new apartment lately. My 8-yr old male neutered cat has always been an indoor-outdoor cat; but since i moved, i thought it the better part of prudence to turn him into an indoor cat only. Since he has been watching dogs being walked from my windows, he has meowed to be let out. In any battle of wills, the cat always wins; so i got his halter and leash out and put it on him. He used to just lie down and wouldn't walk in it when i tried that a year ago - but now, he allows me to strap it on; walks (trots) the sidewalks like a dog beside me and EXPECTS me to go walkies with him TWICE every night (when all is quiet). Does anyone there have the same situation? And am i really supposed to be doing this?

Cats Will Out - - - your Cat has obviouslly figured out that the only way to go out is on the end of a leash so he is swallowing his pride and conceding ever so slightly to human dominance of Earth. If it is what Kitty wants then keep it up. He sounds like one migty fine Cat. You are Blessed.

Hi there...some cats take to leash quite well and there is nothing wrong with it. Many people have learned that this is a good alternative for their cats who like going outdoors. It's also gives the owner the ability to have peace of mind where their cats especially in a city or busy surburb, which presents many dangers--cars, poisons, aggressive dogs, mean people, etc. Certain communities require all pets be under control not just canines so this is the best solution if that law is in effect.

Anyhow, both my cats love it, but will also walk nearby me without a leash in controlled environments too.

I've never walked my cats, but I have tied them outside, before. I had a cat that was trying to kill the neighbors kittens in the barn a quarter of a mile down the road, so, when he wanted outside, I would put him on a tie-out. He had his own dog/cat house.

That is awsome that you and your cat can "go walkies" every night. I wish more cat owners would be more responsible for their cats. I'm sure the neighbors appreciate waking up to a car that doesn't have your cat's paw prints on their cars, or not waking up to cat fights. (Yes, neutered cats also fight.)

LOL, Yes, I had a cat that I used to take on walks. Nothing strange or weird about it. Plus smart move using a halter, just make sure your cat can not get out of it should something scare him. Why would you not want to take a cat that wants to go on walks. If you both enjoy it do it!

Well done to you for training your cat (or in this case him training you) to walk on a lead. Normally to get a cat to do this you need to start very very young. IF you enjoy the walk and so does your cat then YES you should be doing this. It's safer for him then you simply letting him out to run around the block in risk of behing hit by a cat, attacked by another animal or him killing birdlife/small creatures.

I did the same thing with one of my cats. I got him as a kitten, and there were dogs in the house he was born in also, and whenever the dogs were walked, so were the kittens. The funny part of it was that he took care of his "business" while he was out (like a dog)

At least you don't have to worry about him getting into trouble when he goes out...

I think that is a sad story.
I could never take my cat on a lead nor could I ever give her up to another owner.
I think however you must consider giving your cat to someone who will take care of her in the way she was used to . .or move away from the city
