I wish I knew the right answer to this. Some would say you have to be really psychologically and emotionally ready. Some would say mature. I think having a negative attitude towards sex (it might hurt) might make you overfocus on that issue instead of asking the deeper question: do you really have to prove your love to this person in this matter or is this something you are naturally drawn to and not at all pressured to do.
Sex is a very intimate act and you are very vulnerable during the process.
If you are mature enough and old enough to continue pursuing this matter, get yourself to a doctor first (a gyn) to get yourself examined and on birth control. Once the birth control has kicked in (it may need a month or two for your body to adjust, again ask your doctor) I would suggest making it fun by using plenty of condoms for him and plenty of lube for you (KY Jelly is the standard) to make entry a little easier and having a towel under you and that both parties take their time to help you get stimulated and excited and make out and if it happens, let it happen naturally and not out of pressure or obligation or guilt or worry "they'll be upset or angry with me for teasing them". When you are ready, that's when you're ready and not before. When you're ready you're a bit more relaxed and the experience is less painful for it.
Most important, you need a lover who will listen to you, is considerate of you, and will take their time with you. If they get attitudy or frustrated or angry or upset, then they're so not worth it. Mind you, I'm assuming in this post you are a girl. If you are a boy, my guy friends have stated that it never really was painful for them. For the girls, it's more of a feeling of being invaded, and if you never had sex, your body needs time to adjust.
Talk to your doctor and talk to someone you trust that actually has experience and knowledge beyond boasting.

I broke my hymen with my fingers to make tampon insertion easier. There was no blood or pain. Even if you break your hymen by yourself, you may wish to have some lube (or lubricated condoms) when you first have sex, if you're worried about pain -- particularly if you've never inserted anything in your vagina before.

No, I haven't heard of anyway that it can be done without pain except that you can make sure your partner goes as gently as possible and you might want to bite down on something like a cloth,no joke.

the best you can hope for is that whoever takes your virginity takes it slow and patiently. the last thing you want is some jerk to just cut loose and hurt you.

It doesn't always hurt, in fact sometimes girls who use tampons may find that they have already busted their hymen. I think it's just important that you are with someone who care about you and looks out for ya. good luck

Ask your partner to be very, very gentle while penetrating his penis in to your vagina, ask him to be slow & kind, caress to you, the enjoyment you feel will take you off the thought of getting hurt.
