The good people out there in the public get respected 98% of the time. I will be the first to admit that there may be a couple of people out there that get to see the bad side of an officer for no reason, but that is few and far between. as for the bottom feeding, scum sucking, scavenging pukes that make up the rest of the public, TO HELL WITH THEM ALL!!!!! If you break the law, you deserve to be treated like the **** that you are. The dirtbag that feels he is not being respected by his arresting officer did not respect the old woman he just robbed at gunpoint, nor did the little teenie bopper that just got his license respect the speed limit. Just one of those things I guess.

Another opinion: I think the police have definite respect for the public. Disdain (to me) isn't a good alternative option for your question. In addition to respect, the opposite that I might choose is something along the lines of alienation. No matter what the officer does, there's a feeling that his/her efforts are more source for fault finding (by the public) than appreciation. The new officer spends the first years of his/her career proudly going about business in the community, but many officers end up feeling as though they just don't have the necessary community (or from the public at large) support to leave them each day with a feeling of great self worth. And the media tends to fuel that feeling.
I don't think the police will disdain the public. But I think it more common that the police will often feel disdained 'by' the public.

Most cops join the force for the right reasons. They want to help the public and keep their neighborhood safe. I think these guys do as good a job as they can and I am grateful for them. As with any profession, there are some that do not belong on the force. They are either burned out or are corrupt. That's where it is very important to have a chief or captain how is on the ball and knows what is going on. I have always found in my interactions with a cop, that if you treat them professionally you get the same courtesy.

I think that as with all people who have to deal with the public, it would depend on the person they are dealing with. People have a disrespect and disdain for the police. Sorry but when you are disrespectful and mean you deserve what you get.

Police sort people into 3 categories.... decent people, as sholes and criminals. They go out of their way to treat decent people with respect. They deal harshly (although at all times professionally) with criminals and tolerate as sholes but give them zero slack.
For example, let's say you are pulled over for speeding. A decent person is likely to get off with a warning or a minimal fine depending on the situation (often they will underestimate your speed to put you in a lower fine category). Someone acting like a total jerk is going to get the maximum fine. If he gets too far out of line, he is likely to get maced and go for a ride in the back of the car with a nice fat fine waiting for him from the local judge after a 24 hour stay in the local jail. Heaven help you though if he happens to notice the 2 pound brick of cocaine under your seat and set the drug sniffing dog on you. He'll be collecting as much info as possible to make sure there is an air tight case against you before hauling your *** away.
Note, if you think cops treat people with disdain, you either live in a crack neighborhood or you are an as shole and get treated accordingly. Of course, all criminals think the cops are unfair and have no respect for them, lol.

The police resect those who deserve respect. The public doesn't always respect the police. Instead of taking responsibility for doing something wrong and getting caught, sometimes the bad guy blames the cop for catching him and gives him a bunch of crap.

Respect. If the police do not respect the public, how can they expect respect and support from the public? Think about it.

police put their lives on the line every minute of their working day to protect the public, does that sound like disdain? it sounds to me like the ultimate show of respect and caring.

That truly depends upon the community - - - the city or hamlet or burb in which one resides. Deep inside most women/men going into law enforcement have a sincere desire to do good. In time, depending upon the individual that desire might be singed with cynicism. Overall the Police are more often your best friend if you figure out what their 'bent' is - - - where they are coming from in regards to race sex sexuality etc - - - in other words no matter what color or sex you are if you greet most cops with an anti-Bush remark they might park a night stick up your kazoo. I would suggest that the average policeperson respects individuals more than they resect 'the mob.' Define that as you wish. Peace.
