Hi Tony...there are multiple reasons as to why a cat will lose weight. Depending on age, if it's an outdoor feline, etc. The medical aspect varies as it could be kidney failure, low potassium levels, hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis, diabetes or as simple as fleas or parasites. The only way to be sure is to have your cat examined by a vet as soon as possible. They will conduct a physical exam, fecal exam and do a blood test as well. It's best to allow a medical professional speculate rather than have us guess since we are not vets. :-)

Take your cat to the vet for a physical. I noticed my cat losing weight, then unusual behavior. I took the cat into the vet and we noticed very little, lower potassium so we started him on a supplement. Things should have returned to normal. In the next several months they seemed to get worse, and we just found out yesterday that it appears that his kidney numbers are up. This is odd to occur in just 3 months, so it is most likely something serious (kidney failure or cancer). Depending on the age of your cat, finding out early can help with preventative measures.

this could be hypothyroidism, especially if the cat's coat is less well groomed than usual. You need to see a vet.

if they are outside cats, i wouldnt worry about it, my cats in the summertime loos a little weight, cuz they are more active, and in the wintertime, they get fat again, if they are loosing alot of weight, thet might have worms, hope this helps.
