With all we are reading about it, it seems to me that nobody has come out and said exactly what the raison d'etre of the religion is. Is it to kill all non-Muslims, as some report, or to live peacefully with other religions? Any info much welcomed, but please base your answer on facts, not opinions.

Peace. The underlying theme of Islam is this: There is no god except the One God. This means the God that created the universe. The God that created Adam. The God of the biblical prophet Abraham, Moses and Jesus. God is one and has no partners or intermediaries. God is not 3 in one. God does not have any sons or daughters. God can not be reached through an idol. God loves and and wants us to be successful.

The second part of Islam is to believe in Muhammad as the last and final messenger of God. This being said, we need to draw from his life and apply to our practical life how to pray, eat, sleep, build relations with family, kin, neighbors and the world around us.

Islam hates the idea of killing innocent people and loves the idea of living in peace with all people. At the same time, Islam hates tyranny and oppression and commands us to fight against oppression. True Muslims do not terrorize people... but some misguided people do terrorize in the name of Islam - they are wrong.

Basically, Islam is about believing in the One God and the Final Messenger and Prophet of God, Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Islam is a religion of peace.

The person accepting Islam has to believe that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) is his messenger. Believing in one God is like not just in worship but behavior as well in the materialistic world. For example, many Muslims that continue the practice of banking interest which is forbidden so denying God's authority and hence muslim just by name. A muslim who paractice's Islam without a doubt and follow rules without question or breaking them are the muslims who have been promised heaven, not the prior mentioned ones.

Now what is a duty of a Muslim. The duty of a Muslim is to try with all he has got to establish the rules sent by Allah on all the humanity. Others may stay with what they believe or don't not a matter but the governance should not be by that of man made rules but the rules of Allah as he is our creator and he knows best for us.

Islam is not just a religion its a complete way of living and it is not possible to explain that in this limited area. If you really like to learn more about Islam then you should go more deeper into the subject to find out the truth about it.

I'm a Muslim woman.

Your question is a good one, but it is very difficult to answer. What is the philosophy behind any religion? Can you sum up the philosophy behind Christianity? Of course not- it's not that easy.

In Islam, like all other religions, it is a sin to kill. And no- we don't go around killing non-Muslims. In most Muslim countries, Christians and Muslims and even Jews live in peace. Extremists mar the image of Islam... Just as Christian extremists mar the image of Christianity and Jewish extremists do the same for that religion...

Anyway, Islam is based on the belief that there is only one God and He is the same God as that of Christians, Jews, etc. We believe in the prophets- Jesus, Moses, Abraham, etc. We believe in helping the poor through 'zakat'. We believe it is a sin to lie, cheat or indulge in extremes...

It really is difficult to sum it up in so many words- do you have more specific questions?

Islam is based on patience, and tolerence. Ofcourse, just like any other religion, it is a good thing to encourage others towards Islam, but that's not the point. Force in any manner in Islam is forbidden...you can't force somebody to do something, even if it's the right thing...it's gotta come from their meaning to do it.

Oh and by the way, in Islam, we are also encouraged to attempt assimilation.

I know there's alot of crazy brown people out there, but there's alot of crazy white people too. Why don't all the non-crazy people, whatever their color may be, get together, and do some good for the world?

As with all religions, it isn't so much what any particular religious doctrine states, although that could be an issue if it involves unacceptable secular edicts, it's how its practitioners represent it in practise. People do all kinds of dastardly things in the name of their God/Religion, almost certainly behaving in the most hypocritical way possible and, thereby, fundamentally misrepresenting their religion.

Sorry, I am not a Muslim, and I have given you an opinion, but I thought it needed stating by way of background information.

Hi,
Islam is a religion of peace! I am a muslim and terroism is totally against our religion. I hate it when the people that did the London bombings shame us muslims because in fact we are shamed that they call themselves muslims. I wish there was a way we could speak out because islam is a beautiful religion.
Islam respects all religions and states Allah is the only one to judge, we should not take matters into our own hands. xx

Islam is a religion of peace.Whatever is happening the world over in the name of Islam is very bad and misleading. You should ask any of your muslim friend to get you a copy of Al-Risala.This book is published from Newdelhi, India.
Terror is a very unislamic word.Love ,peace, compassion, forgiveness is the basic of islam.People like George Bush and his brother Saddam Hussein are propogating rumours about Islam.

Although I'm not a Muslim, I'll not make fun with other religions especially Muslims. Muslims is a peaceful religion. And Jihad means sacrifising your life and belongings in the name of Muslims' God.
