It is a little. However I don't mind as long as what the person is typing is legible, what annoys me is when I see a sentence that takes about 5 minutes to decipher.
I think spell check is a bad idea, I prefer to check my own spelling. Occasionally I misspell words but I'd rather make the occasional typo than rely on spell check all the time.
What really annoys me however is when someone who can't spell answers one of my questions by saying I'm a terrible speller (this has happened a few times).

As an educator, I have learned that people often write the way they speak. When people are not sure of how to spell a word, they will spell the word the way it sounds. We as teachers can teach, but it up to that child to take in what is being taught. Teaching does not begin in school and stop at school. Teaching and learning is an all day lesson. We as parents have to learn how to reteach and implement the lessons being taught at school in our households.
Another thing is that many of the parents are using grammar incorrectly, therefore the child is learning incorrectly. If the parent ask, "Where is it?" that child too will learn how to end sentences with prepositions. Or if "y'all" is used around the house oppose to "you all" then that is the vernacular the child will use.
I do not think America has become ignorant, just more so relaxed. We as parents and teachers do need to work harder at educating a smarter tomorrow.

It ticks me off, too. It stems from the use of text messaging on cell phones. I think people who type this way are probably taking more shortcuts in other areas of their life.
The media doesn't help either. Why do they insist on showing ads during shows? Why does the Disney Channel cut to an unrelated music video in the middle of another show?
Many people believe they must be in a hurry all the time. Trying to do multiple things at once is not helping anything. No wonder ADHD and ADD med usage has skyrocketed and is so prevailent.

Gosh yes! So many here seem illiterate and people think it just doesn't matter - but it does! What on earth are they teaching in school these days? Can't be grammar and spelling, and I also think reading has taken a nosedive. Again, some of these people are pitiful and you wonder if they ever saw the inside of a classroom. Sad really. I mean, just some of the answers to your question here are scary and written so poorly it's not funny.

Yes, I agree. I also teach. I've been rolling this one around in the back of my head. The new emphasis is on quick communication.
The least number of characters for the max of meaning.
We are a society in a hurry. Hurry to work, hurry to finish work, hurry home, hurry up and make dinner or just get take out.
I hope what is really happening is that our language is about to evolve. The artistry associated with a well developed phrase or the nuance of a good word in a sentence is going the way of the dinosaur. Hang onto that dictionary though.

Yes! I agree.
I teach history, but require my students to do a lot of writing and their spelling and grammar are often horrible.
Fortunately, most of my students do know the difference between online and classroom reality.
