I think the same thing that I think when I hear ppl say they give their kids allergy medicine to sleep, rub alcohol on their gums for teething, leave them alone to "run an errand" or anything like that. It is silly, but you cannot make ppl raise kids as you would. You can give them pointers but not "rule" other people. Neglect is neglect even if you want to shun it......
Plus, if you need a cigarette that bad that you cannot wait for your kid to be out of harms way- most likely you will never live long enough to watch them grow up anyway.
Smoking is selfish- I know I did it.......

That should seriously be against the law. And contrary to what most people think, you don't have the right to have kids. It's not in the constitution.
Unfortunately we can't outlaw everything that would be bad for the wellbeing of a child, because that could be made to include everything up to and including fried foods.
People just have to say things to other people, I'm not afraid to say certain things, as long as person doesn't look like a psycho that will try to kill me. Sadly, the aforementioned kind of people are mostly the ones doing this dumb stuff.
sukditup mentioned ^above^ that the highway patrol should be able to pull them over for that. Well, guess what, in the state of PA they can, the second they see the cigarette being held out the window. Each vehicle registration in Pennsylvania comes with a peice of paper that specifically denotes cigarette ashes (amond about 5 other things) as littering. Littering is I think a $300 fine in PA, which is worse then most speeding tickets and running a stop sign/red light. Unfortunatelly I don't think it ever happens.

(PS - Did any of you read the new study that says 1 to 7 hours of a second had smoke A WEEK, can increase your risk of a heart attack by 24%?)

well their going to be subject to passive smoking, but either way you can't protect your kids all the time they will always be around someone who is smoking and get a whiff of it. whether that is walking down the street etc.
However i would advise you to avoid this where possible for your childs own health. And open windows if smoking in the car. But at the end of the day i wouldn't beat urself up too much if you have the occassional smoke in the car with ur kid in the back. But if your only going on a short journey then it may be best to wait till you arrive at ur destination before lighting up.

I think it's wrong to smoke around children, but you can't ban it in cars.
What's to stop people smoking in a small, stuffy room at home with children present? You couldn't police it even if you banned it. At least in a car people generally smoke out of the window!
Instead of making up impractical laws, why not spend the money on free parenting lessons so that more people can understand what is dangerous for children, as well as learn more about the huge task they have ahead of them called raising children?

I think it's appalling that some people are so selfish that they would put the futures of their children at risk. It's a sure thing that children subjected to passive smoke in enclosed areas will have a shorter life expectancy, and are more likely to suffer from a range of illnesses when they get older!
It's manslaughter in advance!

considering the fact that these people are not just hurting themselves but also the sensitive respiratory and nervous system of the child/toddler, these people should be fined!
this is pathetic
i have even seen parents smoke with their kids belted in the passenger seat and they neglect the extreme coughing by the child
they don't realise that they are increasing the risk of blood and lung cancer in their children by 3 times and increasing the risk of learning disabilities in them

I think it's absoutely wrong to smoke in a car with children, or even if someone's a non smoker.
If parents are doing this then there's something wrong with them!!!! Why should a child suffer when it's something they cannot control.

My parents did that to me my whole life up until 2 months ago. The addiction is greater than the threat to someone who doesn't want to breath it in I guess. I personally disagree with such actions.
I'm not sure if it's related or not, but ever since I stopped being around the smoke I've started coughing up a lot of flem.

I consider it to be child abuse, or at least child neglect. The child has no choice but to stay in the back seat, consumed by the smoke. Second-hand smoke is almost as dangerous as inhaled smoke. Adults who smoke around children are very selfish, or maybe just stupid.
